..what it would be like if I really finished the job of decluttering as Marie Kondo says you should.

Hmm.

6 months she says you could take over it.

It's beginning to feel do-able.

It might feel like yesterday's photo?

I came across the phrase 'lightness and ease' in a novel many years ago (at a time when nothing in my life seemed either light or easy!) and I remember thinking Yes, that's what I'd like - some of that please!

I've just remembered the novel was The Ya-Ya Sisterhood, and here is a review of Marie Kondo's book. She says you should get rid of the book when you are finished with it too!

Wondering about some questions your writing made pop up this morning: 'What it would be like if I really finished the job of decluttering?' I am unsure if that is possible for me. To be more precise I don't have an inner image of what that would look like or be like just now. (The image could be a photograph, a phrase, a painting or a feeling). I think I'd like to have such an image.
It's possible I'm at a different (earlier) phase. What I will achieve this year is what you wrote about earlier: to be able to fetch something without having to remove something else first.
I'm wondering also about the six months. I am slow because of limitations my body presents me with every day. Because of being slow like this the process of de-cluttering, clearing, simplifying, has become equally important. Just now 'six months' sounds just a bit goal oriented for me.
And then I wonder, simplifying as a process gives life a wonderful sense of direction, of meaningfulness, could my questioning six months reveal a fear of 'what if I'm finished'?

I haven't read Kondo's book, but with all the references here, I have reserved it from the library. 6 months to totally declutter? Even if I only had myself to consider, I'm not sure that would be feasible Some things I'm really wishy washy about. I follow Elaine St James' thought from Simplify Your Life: if I'm not sure about getting rid of something, I put it in a box in the basement. If after 6 months its still there, then out it goes. Maybe the goal should be not to bring so much into the house to start with.

My minimalist fantasy is to be able to pack my house & be ready to move in 3 days, if it ever came to that. So far, it's just a fantasy.

Your fantasy sounds like what Cath (above) is referring to and what Kondo refers to too. Fascinating!

I have been pretty brutal over the past few months and have stored a lot of stuff away as well - if I don't miss it - that will go too. But stuff keeps coming into the house - I find it a constant job to keep on top of it. I have had to clear one or two people's homes after their death and sorting through all their junk (which might not have been junk to them) is quite a chore - I keep thinking about this as I grow older - I have no children so will a stranger have to do it - to this end I am desperate to keep my belongings to a minimum - just in case.

Like Elaine I do not have children and I've been getting rid of 'stuff' in the last couple of years. I still have too many things. Recently I threw away hundreds of photographs, albums, a big part of my life pre-digital camera, went right in the recycling bin. No regret.

what would i do with this item?
