Simply..fitter?

6/1/2019

Must exercise more, walk more, drink more water.... am finding it very hard to put it into action for more than the odd half day or day,

How do you motivate yourself at this time of year?

I struggle with it every time!  I looked over my own Simply Fitter posts and see from this one that this will never be my strong point!  And yet, though the changes I have made are minimal and have taken years to become habits I am fitter than I used to be. Just acknowledging this to myself actually motivates me.

A little.

I follow Ilona’s (mean queen) walking group in which she challenges everyone to walk every day. The target is 1000 miles a year which works out at 2.73 miles a day or whatever you feel able to manage either more or less.
She emphasises that it is not a competition but a way of challenging yourself. There is a check in on the 1st of every month.
I'm hopeless at setting myself targets but have used this challenge to spur myself on for the last 3 years and feel far fitter mentally and physically as a result. It does take discipline to plan it into your day but it's worth it.
I've added Beachcomber to my name in order to help with distinguishing between other “Sues”.
Good luck with your fitness challenge. Sue

Ps Ilona’s blogspot is called “ Life after money” and the walking group information is on January 1st's post.
You can sign up there for this year's challenge.

A few thoughts about this...

Water - what works for me is to leave glasses of water around the house where I will see them and drink them... especially wherever I may be sitting for any length of time. Or get into the habit of associating water with the bathroom and every time you go to the toilet go and get a drink of water afterwards! You'll soon find both are happening more frequently!!

Walking/exercise - What does your mind tell you Freda when you suggest this to it? Maybe you could do a Byron Katie on it and question your thoughts around exercise?
Also maybe you could use your word for the year to help you and make your walk each day an opportunity to find enchantment and keep a record of what you experience. It might end up being your favourite part of the day!

I used to make up a jug of water with lemon or mint or cucumber and have it sitting out to remind me - more of a summer thing, as is the walking (and gardening if I am honest). When it's raining and blowing a gale I am so happy I can stay home!

I've been using a walking video--yes, it sounds crazy, but there are no places to walk in my neighborhood. Would have to drive 5-15 miles (one way) to find a walking area--and that is crazy. Trying to avoid what happened to me when I visited the UK last January, as you will remember, Freda. Heading there tomorrow, but sadly no visit with you this time. Maybe next trip.

As far as drinking more water goes, I'm with Lotta. There is always a glass of water by the kitchen tap as I prefer it at room temperature, and I sip from it often.
I'm not denying that I, too, need more exercise, but I do think that some of the people who write extolling its virtues should try living on the west coast of the UK with its associated wet weather!
Fret not - the days will perk up and you'll soon be outside more!

I’ve bought myself a beautiful water bottle which holds 500ml so it isn’t enormous. I’m leaving it in the kitchen and fill it up each time I finish the contents. It’s therefore a nice temp to drink and ready for me. So far so good.
I’m going to look at the walking plan. I need accountability in my habits so that sounds great.

Good idea with the water and good luck finding a plan that suits - there is no shortage of help really.

I'm preferring to continue snoozing in my burrow, until the warm sunlight draws me out.

I'm w you Susan! I can walk, walk, walk when the weather's nice but when it's cold & dreary out, let me burrow!

My walking solution is to make regular dates with friends: mondays with lynn, thursdays with angela...etc. we (attempt) to solve the world’s problems..and more like solve our own! We walk and we laugh a lot..plus there is nothing like a woman friend to help you get thru the trials of life. Lynn told me today that socializing is actually a more accurate predictor of longevity than activity so that was encouraging! Let’s get together more often and enjoy each other!

That's so true Julia. We often use meeting friends as a treat in the middle of a walk to spur us on.
