..by the score, if not the hundreds.

My friend in the next village phoned to tell me the huge buddleia was covered in fluttering painted lady butterflies so I jumped on the bus - had to run for it - and went along to look and wonder.

I also wonder what happened to them all in the torrential thundery rain which fell later in the day. Do they hide under the flowers? Do great heavy raindrops damage them?

I've been slowly answering the comments on this post.

Today a beautiful Tiger Swallowtail butterfly found its way onto our deck. I had just let the dog out and he immediately noticed it, but I said, "leave it" and he promptly laid down and simply watched it flutter about only inches from his nose. A harmonious little moment in nature. Twas lovely.

Great photos, Freda. The rain doesn't seem to have done any harm, as they're back today as many as before. I wonder why I've never noticed them in previous years.

I think you maybe took some of them Liz! And Lucille may have the answer to your question. I saw them also in Lenzie and Edinburgh..

Thanks for the photos and the interest. Always good to go to your blog. I haven't seen butterflies these recently, must seek out a buddleia ,but my old cat is all the time lying in wait for, catching and bringing in, far too many huge moths.

It’s a ten yearly phenomenon. Do enter the numbers on the Big Butterfly Count. It’s a 7500 mile round trip from Africa to Arctic Circle. 11 million of them migrated to the UK in 2008.

How interesting, Lucille.
That year, I had a long cedar fence installed, and butterflies clung to its entire length. As I walked down my garden, clouds of them rose up.

That must have been marvellous to see and well worth running for the bus. I have been enjoying watching them as well and guess we have the winds that brought the heat from the Sahara to thank for the butterflies as well. Like you, Freda, I have often wondered how butterflies can disappear so quickly in the rain but have never managed to find one sheltering anywhere.

Running towards beauty... sounds like the best kind of exercise to me! And what a reward...

I'll remember that Lotta. Running towards beauty as my favourite exercise.

Thanks to Lucille, I have reported our sighting to the Big Butterfly Count, along with another type - Pearl-bordered Fritillary - which popped up amongst the scores of Painted Ladies the next day.

Although I haven’t seen many Painted Ladies it has been an exceptional year for Commas, Gatekeepers, Red Admirals and Peacocks.
