Simply..where was I?

Chestnuts, yes. Cut a cross on them with a sharp knife (so that they don't explode like Mog's) and put them on a tray in the oven at 200 for 20 - 25 minutes. Sooo good!

Soup in Carluccio's. Squash soup garnished with some toasted pumpkin seeds and a sprinkling of thinly sliced spring onions and with a tiny drizzle of oil. Every mouthful was delicious.

This is by no means a foodie blog but I do love my food. There are lots of posts under Simply Eat (see sidebar) and I have just had a good browse myself!

Posts about the stress of buying food (I have got over this although it is still an ethical minefield!). Posts about books I found useful,  Posts that make me aware of just how much I have changed my thinking about food, and developed healthier eating habits since that first post.

I hope you have all enjoyed some (but not too much!) beautiful food this day of thanksgiving.

Food is amazing. There are so many possibilities for preparing it. There are so many ways to be creative with it. It is often a source of joy and a way to bring people together. Thanksgiving is the ultimate celebration of that.

The flip side is the guilt that comes when thinking about people who don't have enough to eat -- whether close by or far away. Even though I give to charity that feeds people who are hungry, the thought of not doing enough is there. I've started occasionally giving money to a couple of men who often ask for money in my neighbourhood. They are respectful, not aggressive about asking and always say "thank you". I've seen them buying good food such as sandwiches and fruit with the money, and so know there's a good chance the money is being spent on food, and not drugs or alcohol. It breaks my heart though to know they are out there, sometimes even when it's dangerously cold.

Such difficult issues you raise, and we have to feel we are able to be of some help ....supporting local agencies which can offer shelter in the big cities is so worthwhile.

Definitely a pinch of nutmeg, ginger or curry on that soup - yum.

Re. the world's food problems - we hardly know where to start. Water, for one, for everyone. Distribution of food - there would be enough if it could properly be globally managed without forcing our ideas on everyone. Local problems are shocking, but we have seen personally exactly how it can happen. Awareness and small gestures are definitely a great way to begin. I'm wary of the big companies who advertise, though - where is my money going?!

Sometimes we just have to trust and hope that actions and donations however small make a difference.

you are so right, freda, about how the choosing of good, healthy food, preparing it with love, and enjoying it, are all acts of thanksgiving. becuase of health problems for one of our family members, we had a very simple, but delicious thanksgiving meal last night...the best part of it all was being together...but not having to work so hard, and not feeling over-stuffed and guilty were certainly bonuses!

How lovely that you found bonuses out of the limitations....

The chestnuts and the soup sound wonderful. I enjoyed looking back at the posts in your links, especially when I came across the words "PICNIC WHEN POSSIBLE' - my sentiments exactly!

You've given me the idea of a Winter Picnic...(only when this rain stops though).

Oooh, good plan! Winter picnics are great - one year my family and I had our Christmas dinner as a picnic on top of a hill! Chilly, but wonderful!

I have been to-ing and fro-ing through your links and enjoying them very much - except I realised that reading your post about the supermarket bombardment was as hard as being in one. I had never analysed why it was so debilitating and now that you have, I can think of ways to address some of those points. I am on the verge of giving up the Reward card. One point per pound spent. Each point worth 0.5 pence. 1/2% discount!

I now avoid the huge ones, go rarely, have a list, and get out as quickly as possible! So, I miss some bargains. Life is short....
Thanks for commenting Lucille.
